WWII Soviets reboot (3)
A punishing work schedule including a week long business trip to Frankfurt and a another week long business trip in the US has left very little time for painting these past three weeks, but I did make an effort between the trips and was able to finish off another 22 WWII Soviet infantry this week.
Like the previous batch these are all Artizan Designs picked up from Northstar.
The first pair of figures are from the Command pack, and although a little smaller than the standard infantry are really good characterful sculpts that mix well with the troops.
Two more sections of SWWB08 - Soviet Army Squad II were also completed so I now have a complete 'winterised' platoon in fur hats and padded jackets.
Continuing to use my standard WWII Soviet palette, most of the uniform colours in this batch were 'Russian Uniform' and 'Khaki' with rather less 'US Field Drab'
I'm rather happy with the effect of having the mix of uniform colours.
This time I did not mount all the LMG teams as prone pairs, instead using some kneeling figures on the bases so that I have some variety, the 'spare' prone figures shall be mixed in with gun crews.
I now have enough Soviets painted for three platoons plus a bucket load of supports, I have some more of the old Bolt Action Miniatures Soviets on the painting table at the moment, but once those are complete I had better get cracking with some more Germans.
I've no business trips scheduled now for the foreseeable future so the painting should be able to continue apace, at least until my trip to the UK in August.
Super job on these Soviets, Paul! Often, when I travel for work, I try to bring along a little painting kit so that I still make some progress while in the hotel.
ReplyDeleteCheers Jonathan, I have done the same in the past, but these weeks were really intense. Wake, breakfast, meetings, change, dinner, bed....
DeleteSounds exhausting.
DeleteIt was and had a week or so knock-on with a lack of painting.
DeleteGreat looking Soviets, sounds good that the trips are over at least for a while!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks, and hopefully, yes they are
DeleteSuper duper, the colours all gel nicely.
ReplyDeleteLooking reaLLY GREAT!

Thanks Christopher
DeleteGreat shading on these! Shows off the details well.
ReplyDeleteThank you Allan, they are lovely figures to paint.
DeleteHi Paul, very much admire your work. Is there a particular reason other than colour palette you moved away from the Vallejo Sepia Wash in favour of Army painter strong tone? The reason I ask is I'm choosing between the two options myself and Vallejo wins significantly in terms of budget as the equivalent amount of AP Strong tone wash is around treble the cost locally (1 x 200ml jar vs 11 x 18ml bottles).
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteA couple of reasons:
1. Availability, I can buy the AP washes with a 15 minute drive of my house from three different places
2. Consistency, the Vallejo was is very good but it goes muddy quickly and needs a good shake/stir, but if you agitate it then it takes a while for the bubbles to dissipate, if you paint on the bubbles they stay on the figure.
Much appreciated. That gives me something to think about for sure.
DeleteSuggest you give both a try, the Sepia wash is very good and I like the matt finish you get from it but it does always need a good stir and I'd advise against shaking it.
DeleteGreat painting Paul!
ReplyDeleteThank you
