Let's get the band back together - Warring States Chinese

 

Next weekend I've signed up to play in a Warhammer Ancient Battles event over at Mansfield Wargames Club. Nearly all of my figures are in a container somewhere in transit, but, I did have my venerable Chinese in storage here in the UK. 

I had attempted, unsuccessfully, to sell the lot before I moved, but ended up only selling a few bits and bobs so would need a replenishment draft. Consequently, I made a swift order to the chaps at First Corps. 

Number one on the list was to replace the Army Musician. In the Art of War book it's only supposed to be a single figure, but, if we are going to get the band back together., lets make it a four piece.

Although I painted the original force over ten years ago now and have changed my technique quite a lot since then, I think I've managed to capture a similar style.

I did not have a bolt thrower as a part of the original force but decided that I should add one for the upcoming event. 

It's a lovely model and goes well in the dark red, dark grey and cream theme of the rest of the force.

I also wanted a unit of Straw Dogs in the force, and as part of the Sung range Curteys have some villages that can be used as refugees from a rebel village driven before the advancing army. 

The Straw Dogs will also need some weaponry beyond agricultural implements and walking sticks, so these pair each have a wheelbarrow full of concealed weaponry.

It's been fun revisiting this venerable project. There are at least another four or five unpainted units in the lead pile and maybe I can be tempted into adding the chariots back that I sold.

Andalusian Jinetes

I've not painted anything for the El Cid project for quite some time and these chaps have been sat on top of my paint cabinet for almost a year. The riders were finished last February and the horses just needed high-lights and basing.

So, after a year gathering dust I made the decision to pause painting the ACW collection for a while and instead make a small effort to get these done.

All the figures are from the Gripping Beast range and are lovely figures to paint. Although you'll note that in the intervening year some clumsy oaf has knocked a foot off the chap in the red tunic. One of the horses is of the old-style and not as nice as the newer ones.

These fellows shall either be a single unit of Jinetes when playing To The Strongest or Hail Caesar or half a unit when playing Warhammer Ancient Battles.

Age of Arthur campaign day

On Saturday I ran an Age of Arthur event at the Polly and I am sure we all had a great day.

Eight factions would try to control as much of Brittania as they could following the withdrawal of Rome. We all played

Ady - Twilight of Brittania
Andy - Twilight of Brittania
Carl - Early Saxon Kingdoms
James - Welsh

Keith - Twilight of Brittania 

Paul - Early Saxon Kingdoms

Pete - Welsh

Phil - Early Saxon Kingdoms

We all played three rounds against a variety of opponents using six or so different scenarios. Depending upon the scale of victory you gained and lost territories and if characters were killed or captured you gained and lost gold.

At the end of the day James Morris's Welsh were the most successful faction almost reaching the Anglian coast.
