Gripping Beast Plastic Saxons

In preparation for the Nottingham Young Gamers event on Sunday James gave me a bunch of Gripping Beast Saxons to assemble, each attendee will be taking home a couple of Saxons that they will paint on the day.

James is also running a Viking Raid on a Saxon Village as one of the participation games, so he asked if I could paint a Saxon Lord and standard bearer along with five warriors and five slingers.

These were done in a few hours off of a Army Painter Desert Yellow spray, the figures were base-coated with Vallejo paints and then washed with Vallejo Sepia Wash, highlights were then applied and some scatter applied to the bases.

We played a couple of run-through games yesterday evening utilising these figures along with some of James own. The rules are a simplified version of the Lord of the Rings rules suitable for our 9 to 13 year old audience on Sunday.

Here are a couple of shots of the new chaps.

The Vikings have arrived in their long-ship and have plundered the village killing or scattering the inhabitants. The Saxons summon reinforcements to retake the village while the Vikings try to hold them off while making it back to their ships with the plunder.

Here are a few images of the games that Steve, James and myself played yesterday evening.

  1. The burning building looks excellent. How did you achieve the flames?

  3. They look really nice! I'm looking forwards to getting some of these guys, myself. The buildings, village, and ship are all cool as well.

  4. The game I played was great fun, especially when the Vikings dropped like flies when the ninja slingers got going :-)

  5. Excellent work and looks like a fun game. I used LOTR a couple of years ago for a viking shore raid and they worked a treat. Even did some reference cards

  6. Thanks chaps.

Steve, in game 2 the Vikings had their revenge and managed to load four bits of treasure onto the long-ship.

Scotty, James has put together reference cards too.

Where did you get the longship from? I would really like to add one to my collection.
